The agreement was signed on 28 February 2020 by Ambassador Rémi Mortier, Monaco`s permanent representative to the Council of Europe, and Deputy Secretary General Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni. H.H. the Prince spoke at the opening ceremony, where other speakers were Charles Michel, Belgian Prime Minister, Marie-Christine Marghem, Minister of the Belgian Federal Institute of Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development, and Philippe de Backer, Minister of Digital Strategy, Postal Services and Telecommunications, responsible for administrative simplification. , social fraud, privacy and the North Sea. In his speech, Prince Albert warned of the dangers of a gradual depletion of land resources and the increasing importance of the oceans in this context. On behalf of his FPA2 foundation, he recalled that mobilization in all sectors (governments, NGOs, scientists, associations, local communities, etc.) would help put the oceans at the heart of a collective challenge that supports the values of solidarity and responsibility. Organized jointly by Ministers Marie-Christine Marghem and Philippe de Backer, the conference focused on three main themes: climate change and its impact on ocean biodiversity, the mixing of marine energy and the preservation of the sea and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from ships. Among the many personalities involved were: Brune Poirson, Secretary of State to the Minister of Ecological and Inclusive Transition, Karmenu Vella, European Commissioner for the Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, and Denis German, Director of the Monaco Science Centre. On the same day, the prince also participated in the CDP Europe Awards 2019 at the Brussels City Hall, where he was welcomed by the city`s mayor, Philippe Close.
At the event, the Sovereign recalled his personal commitment for more than 25 years to the defence of the environment, the actions he has taken for more than 10 years through his foundation and his government`s commitment to implementing sustainable solutions to promote energy transition, sustainable mobility and renewable energy.
