Indeed, the TTTA received a significant change in the negotiation in early 2001 of a new Social Security Agreement (SSA) with Australia, as well as a series of national legislative changes regarding Australia`s social security and immigration rules for New Zealand migrants. While the fundamental principle of granting New Zealand citizens the right to work and life in Australia with minimal restrictions remains, migrants will no longer be treated as permanent residents of Australia after February 2001 and will not be entitled to a wide range of social assistance, regardless of their length of stay in Australia. In addition, despite recent changes in 2016, they have only limited flexibility to secure the length of permanent residence or Australian citizenship. The agreement was announced on February 4, 1973 and came into force shortly thereafter. The agreement is not expressed in the form of a binding bilateral agreement between Australia and New Zealand, but it is a series of immigration procedures applied by each country and supported by common political support. Although the exact nature of the agreement was different from one time to the next, it still allows citizens of Australia or New Zealand to live indefinitely in the other country and accept most occupations. New Zealand nationals, who are not also Australian nationals, may not work in Australia in areas related to national security or in the Australian public service. The agreement itself is part of a system of other agreements and treaties such as the Australia New Zealand Closer Economic Relations Trade Agreement (1983), the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement (1998), various social security agreements between Australia and New Zealand (1994, 1995, 1998 and 2002), Australia and New Zealand (Standard Classification of Occupations) (2006). SmartGate (2007) and Trans-Tasman Patent Attorney Regime (2013). Trans-Tasman Travel (TTTA) allows Australian and New Zealand citizens to work and live in each other`s country with minimal restrictions, and is considered an important part of the agreement on closer economic relations between the two countries. As a country, this proximity is reflected in two major agreements: the Australia- and New Zealand trade agreements for closer economic relations (ANCERTA); and the trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement (TTTA). These agreements allow Aussies and Kiwis to travel and work freely in each other`s countries and allow companies to sell their products almost as easily as if they sold them at home.
There is already a security partnership between CANZUK countries and the United States, the so-called “Five Eyes” agreement. The partnership would build on this basis, particularly for CANZUK countries.
